Jawara Alleyne (b. 1991, Jamaica) was raised in the Cayman Islands. Striking through interdisciplinarity, he explores identity through his art and design work. He holds an MA in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins and is an alumna of Fashion East, a London-based talent incubator at London Fashion Week. In his work, Alleyne connects fashion with identity. He currently works as the Creative Director of his eponymous label, whilst lecturing at Central Saint Martins.
“It wasn’t until I left Cayman [Island] and moved to London and studying in London, where I really started to investigate my own culture and history. I started thinking about the things that are inspiring to me on a world stage and seeing where those things also exist in the spaces that I’m from.
Thinking of anti-fashion, Rebellions, General defiance, Identity within the fashion research, I started to fall in love with carnival.Through investigating I saw the importance of carnival historically and what it means for peoples of the caribbean and the diaspora in general. These are our stories — we create through collaboration and resourcefulness. All year round.”
